Teachers Told to Reapply for Their Jobs with Sunnyvale CA School

It remains unclear what specific event or series of events at the school resulted in the apparent turmoil, but in a seemingly unprecedented move, the Cupertino Union School District has asked all 24 teachers and additional support staff at West Valley Elementary School to reapply for their jobs.

This change comes on the heels of the second principal vacancy in roughly a year. The whole process is being branded as a process to improve the school's culture and the relationship between community and staff.

Superintendent Wendy Gudalewicz said the following, "Never in my career has this ever happened, it's not something we want to repeat, it's not something we plan to repeat, and it's something we feel is necessary to move forward."

With such a unique situation playing out, the local teacher’s union, the Cupertino Education Association, is tracking the reapplications closely to make sure that reassignments comply with the collective bargaining agreement.

Robin Robinson will be taking over as principal at West Valley, she comes from nearby Eaton Elementary and has 24 years of experience in education.
