Elk Grove Mourns The Passing of Young Classmate

Over the weekend, Toby Johnson Middle School seventh-grader Aaron Nguyen passed away during basketball practice.

The 12-year-old fell unconscious Friday night and could not be revived by emergency or hospital personnel, according to school district officials.

According to Xanthi Pinkerton, Elk Grove Unified School District spokeswoman, the district sent 20 counselors, psychologists and mental health therapists to campus to help  students for as long as needed. Nearly 100 students have already sought emotional aide during this difficult time. Counselors were also sent to other schools in the district as well.

A vigil was held Saturday night at Joseph Kerr Middle School where the incident occurred.

The straight-A student took honors classes, was a member of an anti-bulling and anti-drug group known as Club Live, and hoped to one day play in the NBA.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s office said they are unable to determine a cause of death until additional testing was done. That could take up to a month, according to Coroner Kimberly Gin
