Who's Tracking Iraq War Casualties? An Oakland High School Teacher

The LA Times has a profile Monday of Joel Wing, an Oakland Tech Social Studies teacher "has become one of the go-to sources for reliable data and trends on the violent toll of the 14-year-old conflict in the troubled country."

A teacher and his MacBook, doing the work that UN and military used to do, only better.

The story notes that Wing has been blogging about the war since its begining in 2003 and that he reads 44(!) English and Arabic language newspapers a day.

Though he has become internationally recongized for his work, would he ever elave teaching? Again from the LA Times "“I'm very committed to teaching at a public urban school,” Wing said, “and wasn't going to step away from the kids for that much time.”

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District Superintendent will be getting a nice bonus.

In a unanimous vote, the Board voted this week to give Superintendent Fred Navarro a $34,450 bonus.
