Bakersfield City School Board Needs a New Trustee

The Bakersfield City School Board has voted to appoint a new trustee in lieu of holding a special election.

Board member Raymond Gonzales recently resigned leaving a vacancy on the board. This week, three of the remaining board members voted to appoint a replacement citing the $78,000 bill that the district could face if they decide to hold an election. Additionally, voters would have to wait until November to select a replacement.

Trustee Pamela Baugher was the lone dissenting voice who wanted a more democratic process for the selection.

Applications to fill the District 3 seat will be accepted until Wednesday, July 12 at 5 p.m. and the board must select a new trustee by Thursday, July 20 or else face a special election in April 2018.

Interested applicants must submit a letter of interest, completed Candidate Information Sheet, resume of qualifications, and three letters of endorsement to the BCSD Board of Trustees, 1300 Baker Street, Bakersfield CA 93305 by the deadline.
