Oakland’s New Superintendent is Home-Grown
Oakland Unified has picked their new Superintendent from their own offices.
Kyla Johnson-Trammel, currently serving as Interim Deputy Superintendent, will start in her new role on July 1.
Johnson-Trammell was born and raised in East Oakland and worked with the district for more than 18 years as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, associate superintendent, and now superintendent.
“I am honored by this opportunity to guide such an important organization in my hometown. To lead the teachers and staff of OUSD has been a dream of mine since I first stepped into a classroom as a professional,” said Johnson-Trammell. “I am excited by the progress our District has made and look forward to tackling the challenges that lie ahead.”
Interim Superintendent Dr. Devin Dillon has been leading the district ever since Oakland Unified’s previous Superintendent Antwan Wilson resigned at the end of 2016 to accept a position in Washington D.C. as chancellor of schools.
