Sweetwater Union High Receives $8.5 Million Grant

The Department of Defense is giving the Sweetwater Union High School District an $8.5 million grant for students studying science, technology, engineering and math.

The grant is the result of a partnership between the Department of Defense and The National Math and Science Initiativev

The 10 high schools that will benefit from the grant are:

  • Bonita Vista
  • Chula Vista
  • Eastlake
  • Hilltop
  • Montgomery
  • Mar Vista
  • Olympian
  • Otay Ranch
  • Southwest
  • Sweetwater

About 10 percent of enrolled students in the high schools come from military families.

The grant couldn’t come at a better time. A new poll from Berkeley IGS/EdSource shows registered state voters supporting more STEM education in K-12.

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District Superintendent will be getting a nice bonus.

In a unanimous vote, the Board voted this week to give Superintendent Fred Navarro a $34,450 bonus.
