Santa Clara COE Supt Leaves; Interim Supt Named

The Santa Clara County Office of Education is looking for a new Superintendent.

Last week, the board and chief of schools Jon Gundry agreed to part ways. In a statement, Board President Dr. Michael Chang said, “The Board and Mr. Gundry have entered into the agreement believing it is in their respective best interests as well as in the best interests of the County Office of Education.”

The board and Gundry have been in conflict over how to best manage the district for nearly a year now. Superintendent Gundry was appointed by the Board of Education in July 2014. He previously served as the Superintendent of the Pasadena Unified School District.

The County Board of Education will pay Gundry $150,893 in severance. The board has also appointed Dr. Mary Ann Dewan as Interim Superintendent effective immediately. She was selected by a unanimous vote during the November 15 board meeting.

"The board will now turn its attention to filling the position permanently with the goal of having a new superintendent in place by July 1, 2018," said Dr. Chang. "As we move through this process, we will be communicating regularly with our stakeholders to ensure that everyone is informed and aware of our progress."

Dr. Dewan earned her doctorate in educational administration from Indiana State University. She received a master's degree in educational administration and elementary education from Butler University, and a bachelor's degree in elementary education, with a minor in special education, from Marian University.
