Calaveras High School Principal Takes Job as Summerville Union Superintendent

Calaveras High School Principal Michael Merrill will start his new job as superintendent of the Summerville Union High School District in Tuolumne County next week. Merrill’s appointment was announced at the end of last month.

The move has been described as bitter-sweet by the beloved administrator, as well as his colleagues.

“Our students are really going to miss him,” said Calaveras High office manager Dee Dee Weatherby. “He really takes the time to get to know them and genuinely cares about each and every one of them as well as each staff member. I’m so sad that he is leaving us but happy for this opportunity for him. He is a great guy and I wish him all the best.”

Calaveras Unified Superintendent Mark Campbell similarly called Merrill a dedicated individual with “a phenomenal work ethic and pure passion for his job.”

Merrill has served as the principal of Calaveras High for the past 8 years. He held the position from 2006 to 2008, but left briefly to serve as director of fiscal services for CUSD. He also previously worked as a principal at Valley Springs Elementary.
