First Latino in 25 Years Elected to Long Beach Unified School Board

Juan Benitez is the first Latino to be elected to the Long Beach Unified School Board in 25 years.

Benitez serves as executive director for the Center for Community Engagement at Cal State Long Beach. He won the district 3 seat with close to two-thirds of the vote, 62.56 percent.

He says his first goal as board member is to continue working to address disparities across the district.

According to the latest data from the California Department of Education, Long Beach Unified enrolls 74,681 students, 56.8 percent of which identify as Hispanic or Latino.
