West Marin Principal Demoted

The principal of West Marin and Inverness schools, Matthew Nagle, has been demoted to elementary school teacher.

Nagle received a notice months ago from the Shoreline Unified School District stating that his employment could change, prompting outrage from concerned parents, teachers and students.

Superintendent Bob Raines gave no reason for the demotion in the notice he sent out, but did note that sixth-grade teacher Chris Eckert would serve as interim principal.

However, Nagle believes he was demoted for challenging Mary Jane Burke for Marin County Superintendent of Schools in this June’s election. Nagle was Burke’s first challenger since she took the post 24 years ago. He lost, having received only 22 percent of the vote.

Nagle has been reassigned to teach K-2 at Bodega Bay Elementary School. No word yet on whether or not he has accepted the position or if he’ll be leaving the district.
