Maywood Teacher Arrested for Beating High School Student
A classroom altercation that escalated to violence against a high school student has landed a Maywood music teacher in jail.
Riley Marston of Maywood Academy High School was arrested Friday for repeatedly punching a student during a dispute that began over the young man’s uniform.
Cell phone video shows the student first taunting the teacher repeatedly, calling him the N-Word, the B-Word and throwing a basketball at him. The teacher, who is black, takes out his phone and appears to be calling for assistance. As the insults continue, the teacher begins hitting the teenager, eventually pummeling him until he hits the ground. The fight was finally broken up when school security personnel arrived.
The student was taken to the hospital but sustained no serious injuries. Detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Victims Bureau are now investigating.
Despite the shocking, physical nature of the altercation, many members of the community — including students — are rallying behind Marston. He has been described as a good teacher who has reportedly been physically and verbally assaulted in the past. A GoFund me page has already garnered more than $40,000 for his legal fees.
