Exeter Unified Hires New Superintendent

The Exeter Unified School District has chosen a new superintendent following Tim Hire’s election as Tulare County Superintendent of Schools in November. George Eddy’s selection became official on Jan. 16 with the finalization of his employment contract.

Eddy has served as EUSD’s director of administrative services for the past seven years and has held the director of career and technical education position for the past three.

“My biggest goal is to make sure students are graduating and that they become part of their community,” Eddy said after the Jan. 16 meeting. (Sun-Gazette) “I want to make sure they are good citizens and that they are educated to the fullest.”

The selection was not without controversy. Many wanted to see a more open recruitment process, with some complaining that the position had only been posted internally. According to Eddy, he and Deputy Superintendent Donya Wheeler were the only candidates under consideration.

Former Exeter Superintendent of Schools Renee Whitson was among the critics.

“This is the most important decision that a board has to make,” said Whitson. “I would challenge all of you to think about what is transparent and honest.”
