Oakland’s Roots Academy to Close

The Oakland Unified School District has voted to close a small Bay Area school amid ongoing financial woes, including a possible teachers’ strike.

The 6-1 decision to shutter Roots International Academy in East Oakland came Monday night at a packed and emotional meeting where school board members were forced off stage.

The district is considering closing or consolidating up to two dozen of its schools where enrollment is on the decline. It’s part of a desperate attempt to stay afloat and meet the requirements of a recent bailout from the state.

Union representatives also met Monday night to discuss their next steps. Oakland teachers want a 12% salary boost over the next three years, but the district says that’s not possible given its immense budgetary challenges.
