Sequoyah High School Senior Wows as Rose Parade’s First Jewish, LGBT Queen

The Tournament of Roses Parade opened 2019 with a new milestone, as an 18-year-old senior at Sequoyah High School in Pasadena became its first ever Jewish and LGBTQ Rose Queen.

Louise Deser Siskel, a bissexual originally from San Marino, California, was selected from a group of women from two dozen Pasadena High Schools in November. She led the parade with distinction on Tuesday.

“What was important to me throughout the interview process was that I was completely transparent about who I was, about the things that I value, and about the things that I advocate for,” Siskel told the Pasadena Star-News.

Siskel has already been accepted to the University of Chicago. She plans on becoming a surgeon.
