Jackie Goldberg in the Lead for LAUSD District 5, But Runoff Likely

The latest tallies for Los Angeles Unified’s District 5 seat showed labor-backed Jackie Goldberg with a comfortable lead Wednesday. But the race will still likely lead to a runoff.

As of Wednesday evening, with 4,710 ballots left to be counted, Goldberg led with 48.26% of the vote. Huntington Park Councilwoman Graciela “Grace” Ortiz was in second place with 13.30% and Mayor Eric Garcetti’s former aide Heather Repenning was a very close third with 13.09%.

Goldberg would need more than 50% of the vote to avoid a runoff with the second-place winner.

LAUSD’s District 5 seat was formerly occupied by Ref Rodríguez before he pleaded guilty to money laundering charges. It is seen as a critical swing vote, particularly on issues of charter schools and labor issues.
