Schools Must Alter Records for Transgender Students Under New Bill

Transgender students may soon have their school records updated to reflect the names and genders they identify with.

The changes are required by a bill passed in the Legislature Thursday. It is expected to be signed into law by the governor.

The bill, AB 711, requires schools to update past GEDs, diplomas, and transcripts upon request. That way, prospective employees and students won’t have to inadvertently reveal their transgender status when applying for a job or school.

"While this is a real problem that can negatively impact transgender and nonbinary Californians when applying for jobs or school, the overall cost of implementing this bill will be relatively minor," said the bill’s author, Assemblyman David Chiu (D-San Francisco).
