Huntington Beach School District to Lay Off Dozens of Teachers, Shutter Elementary School
It was a budgetary bloodbath at the Huntington Beach City School District board meeting on Tuesday. Faced with a projected deficit of $6.8 million, the board voted to lay off 29 teachers, let go of most transfer students, and close an elementary school.
Tuesday’s vote was 3-2. The board has not yet selected an elementary school for closure.
The climbing deficit is partly due to lower enrollment. Families are moving out if the district and into more affordable areas, the Orange County Register reports.
