Bakersfield City School District Fills Area 4 Seat

The Bakersfield City Board of Education selected a new member Thursday, while another trustee — Area 5’s Fred Haynes — had to leave the chamber to seek medical attention at a hospital.

Haynes was experiencing light headedness and dizziness. An ambulance was called and he was placed on a stretcher to be taken to a nearby hospital.

All that commotion left Laura Guerrero-Salgado visibly shaken as she tried to answer questions for the Area 4 trustee interview. But board members were impressed and voted to put her in the seat.

Guerrero-Salgado was one of three people interviewed for the position formerly held by Russ Shuppert. Area 4 includes Longfellow, Williams, Mount Vernon, Garza, Pioneer Drive, Voorhies, Fletcher and Cesar Chavez elementary schools; Sierra, Stiern, Washington and Cato middle schools; Compton Junior High; Owens Primary; and Owens Intermediate.

This will be the first time Guerrero-Salgado has sat on a school board. She said her children, who attend school in the district, were the reason she ran. She attends meetings regularly so she is familiar with the board and its processes.

Guerrero-Salgado will serve until November when there will be an election for four of the board’s seats, including Area 4.
