Berkeley’s Washington and Jefferson Elementary Schools to Be Renamed

The Berkeley Unified School District will change the name of its Jefferson and Washington elementary schools amid a national reckoning on race.

The school board adopted a “Resolution in Support of Black Lives Matter” last week, which includes a call to rename the schools. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were both slave owners, which is the reason activists have requested new designations.

Schools, governments, and companies have been changing names and branding as a way to show solidarity with those marching for racial justice after the killing of George Floyd. But school renamings predate current events. Schools in Marin County, Contra Costa, and Burbank have all been renamed within the past 15 months.
