Tony Thurmond Addresses Death of George Floyd
California public schools chief Tony Thurmond is one of many public officials speaking out about the death of George Floyd and the protests that have gripped the nation.
“I am haunted by the sound of his voice, begging to breathe, begging for life and we must address that trauma head on,” Thurmond said during an address on Facebook Monday, referring to Floyd’s death. “We must have hard conversations.”
As an African American, Thurmond said he thinks about the realities of race everyday. He plans to meet with other education leaders to discuss how schools can better combat racial bias and foster empathy and tolerance among students and faculty.
