Welcome to Oracle High
Design Tech High School in Burlingame will have a new home in 2017 at the Oracle campus. The school has also made an effort to be more inclusive of minorities and girls — two groups with little to no representation in the growing tech industries of Silicon Valley.
Because of its relationship to Silicon Valley, Design Tech will focus on "STEAM" subjects -- science, technology, engineering, arts and math. Students will also be able to work hands on with Oracle volunteers, providing an insight into the real working world.
Silicon Valley is increasingly focusing itself on becoming education providers. Not too long ago Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is supporting a new pre-school and K-8 in East Palo Alto.
Oracle CEO Safra Catz revealed that the company's founder, Larry Ellison, told her "he'd love to have a school where students learn to think."
The school’s cofounder and executive director Ken Montgomery is a Stanford grad with a doctorate in administration and policy analysis. He’s said that while it is a tech school and will not solely focus on technology but rather teaching students learning skills.
"It's not a technology school in the traditional sense," Montgomery said. "We teach mindset, critical thinking, problem solving, creativity and collaboration."
Design Tech is not like a regular school, it’s a cool school.
