Potential Layoffs, Protests at Montebello Unified

Workers and educators at Montebello Unified School District can expect layoffs in the near future, but not right now.

The school board had announced that it was considering passing multiple resolutions that would eliminate certain positions and layoff several employees. At the latest board meeting to vote on the resolution, several protestors gathered outside the district office, and the board tabled the three resolutions.

The district needs to cut $15 million from its budget for the next school year in order to avoid a state takeover. Additionally, the Los Angeles County Office of Education has required the district to finalize a plan by Feb. 17.
