Calaveras Teachers Strike Began Thursday; Schools Remain Closed
Calaveras teachers are officially on strike after the teachers union and school district officials failed to reach an agreement this week
All Calaveras schools were closed on Thursday and will likely continue into Friday.
According to a statement issued by Superintendent Mark Campbell, “if we can't provide the necessary staffing to create a safe and secure learning environment, we have no other choice but to close schools at this time. Please note, these are school days we may have to make up to meet the minimum requirement.”
Negotiations began Wednesday evening and lasted all night with no final decision. The Calaveras Unified Educators Association have been asking for a 6.5 percent salary increase. The Calaveras Unified School District offered a 2 percent increase.
