Newsom Says Schools Could Reopen in Late July or Early August

Public schools could begin opening weeks before the typical school year, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Tuesday

The announcement came during remarks on a phased-in reopening of the state, which Newsom says is weeks, not months, away. He suggested schools could open in late July or early August.

“We recognize there’s been a learning loss because of this disruption. We’re concerned about that learning loss even into the summer,” Newsom explained. “Our kids have lost a lot with this disruption.... And you can either, you know, roll over and just accept that or you can do something about it.”

State Superintendent Tony Thurmond said important health and finance questions would have to be answered first. Officials must make sure they can keep students safe and pay for the teachers and resources needed to facilitate social distancing in schools.
