Peralta Community College District Faces Possible Takeover

California Community Colleges Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley is facing calls to intervene as troubles mount at the Peralta Community College District in Oakland.

Pressure is coming from former Peralta chancellors, two current and former trustees, the Oakland NAACP, and the Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team (FCMAT).

“Those groups and individuals are calling for state intervention at Peralta to fix its problems: shaky finances, academic probation and what they call a broken relationship between trustees and top administrators,” EdSource’s Michael Burke reports. “The district is currently fighting to keep its accreditation, with all four colleges having been put on probation last year by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges.”

A decision on if and how to intervene is expected on Jan. 19.
