Moderna Begins Vaccine Trials On Children Under 12

Moderna has begun coronavirus vaccine trials on children between the ages of six months and under twelve years. The outcome could ultimately be a game changer for the virus’ trajectory and for school reopenings.

6,750 children in the U.S. and Canada will be enrolled in the study. California is among more than a half dozen states where it is taking place. Researchers are trying to determine efficacy, safety, and proper dosage for young people.

21.4% of the total U.S. population has been vaccinated against the coronavirus so far. But until we know the vaccine is safe and effective for those under 16, that number won’t include children. That leaves a weak link in public health once schools re-open, even though studies have consistently shown children are much less likely to transmit the virus.
