LA School Board Approves $20 Billion Budget
The Los Angeles Unified School Board approved a $20 billion budget for the 2021-22 school year on Tuesday. The colossal spending plan includes an operating budget of $13.8 billion with nearly $500 million for new teachers, custodial staff, and mental health counselors.
LAUSD will put additional funds toward early education, early literacy programs, college readiness programs, and the largest summer enrichment program in the district’s history. The Board has also established a new Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP), which is supposed to be more transparent and accessible. You can read about that here.
One thing the 2021-22 budget does not include is an amendment seeking further decreases in school police funding. That amendment was voted down 4-2, despite a robust effort by social justice advocates. Demonstrators rallied outside the meeting Tuesday calling for the amendment’s adoption.
