Don Griffith to Resign From Desert Sands School Board

Desert Sands Unified Trustee Don Griffith is resigning after 13 years on the school board. Griffith, a practicing attorney, has been appointed California Superior Court Commissioner

Griffith’s departure will add one more item to a list of challenges facing the district. There is a recall attempt underway against the entire board. The district is also searching for a new superintendent, as Supt. Scott Bailey is scheduled to retire at the end of the school year.

Desert Sands was one of the districts that faced enormous opposition from some residents for adhering to state and local COVID-19 protocols. Griffith himself was attacked at board meetings and became the focus of ire for anti-mask activists.

Griffith is the longest-serving member currently on the school board. Colleagues recalled his “tireless service” and dedication to the district over the years.

“He has remained steadfast in his dedication to build a better tomorrow for the community. He will be missed,” said Supt. Bailey.

Griffith’s resignation takes effect Jan. 18.
