The School Where Kids Run the Cafeteria

Imagine a school where the students actually look forward to the school cafeteria lunch. That’s how it is at Pacific Elementary School in Davenport, south of San Francisco, where students have been cooking quality meals for peers and staff since 1984.

Pacific Elementary’s Food Lab program doesn’t just churn out delicious breakfasts and lunches from cuisines around the world. It’s also a learning opportunity for students. As any chef knows, cooking requires basic mathematics, time management, and life skills.

The unique program is also a chance to give back to the community. Davenport is a farming town and many of the ingredients the students use are farm-to-table, grown by locals.

EdSource’s John Fensterwald recently visited the school to learn more about the Food Lab and its impact on students and families. Read more here
