Sonoma Valley Unified Superintendent Exits

The Sonoma Valley Unified School District has parted ways with Superintendent Adrian Palazuelos. The Sonoma Index-Tribune reports Palazuelos left “abruptly” after reaching a separation agreement with the school board. He was previously out on medical leave.

It’s not clear what led to the superintendent’s departure. Before Thanksgiving, the Board met to discuss the discipline, dismissal or release of a public employee, but that employee was not identified.

The separation agreement stipulates six months of pay and benefits. It was approved 3-2, with John Kelly and Troy Knox opposed.

“The presence of a payout to Adrian Palazuelos was the primary reason I voted against the contract,” Kelly told the Index-Tribune. “I also voted against the contract because it includes a nondisparagement agreement clause, which I think limits the public’s ability to learn about Adrian Palazuelos’ behavior and my ability to comment on the same.”

Deputy Superintendent Elizabeth Kaufman will serve as acting superintendent.
