Supt. Tony Thurmond Coasts to Re-Election
California voters have decisively re-elected State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond over his opponent Lance Christensen.
As of Thursday morning, Thurmond led with 62.7% of the vote.
The Superintendent’s position is a non-partisan one, but Republicans were behind Christensen. He’s the head of the conservative California Policy Center and a partner of Let Them Breathe, an organization which opposes COVID mandates in schools. Thurmond was backed by California’s Democratic Party, the California Federation of Teachers, and the California Teachers Association.
Even with pandemic school closures and numerous controversies at the California Department of Education, Christensen always had a steep uphill battle in the very blue Golden State.
