Bystanders Subdue Sledgehammer-Wielding Man Who Tried to Enter an Elementary School

A frightening incident outside McKinley Elementary School has left a Long Beach community shaken.
Shortly before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, a man armed with a sledgehammer attempted to climb a fence and enter the McKinley campus. Witnesses called 911 and a group of bystanders pulled the suspect down, subduing him until help could arrive.
Police arrived and arrested the man, who soon became unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Long Beach police say there was no use of force against the suspect, but his passing is still being treated as an in-custody death. An official cause will be determined by the county coroner.
