Election Day: Who Will Serve Gateway Unified’s Area 2?

There’s a special election in Shasta County today. While most people are concerned with election procedures and even the possibility of unrest, Gateway Unified families and staff will be watching to see who takes the trustee seat for Area 2.

The position has been vacant since Cherill Clifford resigned amid controversy in February. The Gateway Unified school board was unable to agree on a replacement by deadline, so the issue was sent to voters at a cost of $150,000.

People have already been casting ballots for about a month. Today is the last day of voting.

There are two candidates in the race. Camille King and Casey Bowden are both business professionals and parents in the district. King runs her own retail business. Bowden is in finance and also works as youth basketball coach in Shasta Lake.

King has been explicit about her support for the “parental rights” movement.

Bowden is endorsed by the Save Gateway Committee, which launched a failed recall effort against conservative board members Elias and Lindsi Haynes earlier this year.
