Pre-K Enrollment Climbs Nationwide

Enrollment declines are causing problems for districts across the country. But there’s one silver lining: four-year-olds.

A new report shows pre-kindergarten numbers hit record levels in the U.S. last year. There were 1.6 million pre-k students enrolled in public school in 2022-23 — a giant rebound from the declines seen during the pandemic.

California is in the process of expanding pre-k/transitional kindergarten to all four-year-olds. The TK numbers are already bolstering overall enrollment figures in the state, which remain anemic. Officials hope TK enrollment will boost the numbers even further once the expansion is complete in 2025–26.
